John Burke's Hastings, August 1999
Bexhill and the De-La-Warr Pavilion |

Monday 2 August 1999
We left the car park at Battle and drove back towards Hastings, taking a slight detour to
Bexhill-On-Sea as I wanted to have a look at the De-La-Warr Pavilion.
The only other thing I knew about Bexhill was through reading the bitter-sweet comedy of
Spike Milligan's war memoires. His books can be hilarious - as a teenager, there was a whole
gang of us who could quote Puckoon almost from end to end... |

The interior and staircase. The design was innovative and exciting at the
time - it was the first spiral staircase without apparent support.
There were not many people about inside the Pavilion. A security guard watched uninterestedly
as I took my photographs. |
| Perhaps it needed some of the madcap antics of Gunner
Milligan and his jazz band pals to bring it to life again...
We took a last look at the staircase and walked back towards Bexhill's main
street, where we found a place for our evening meal.
We drove back to Hastings, passing through St Leonards-on-Sea, which seemed to mean "Hastings,
west of the pier"... |
