John Burke's Hastings, August 1999
Canterbury Cathedral
Tuesday 3 August 1999

Leaving the cathedral we come out into the cathedral grounds and to a few ruins.

The 12th century water tower can be seen here, dwarfed in the nearer photograph by the later cathedral tower. The 12th Century water supply system is still in use today and was built by Prior Wilbert. Inside the tower brass pipes carry water up to the first storey where the monks could wash.

Right: the Great Cloisters.

There was a great deal of work put into the bosses over the joins of the vaulting.

Below: mini statues of Elizabeth I and Victoria and Albert.

I love cathedrals and Canterbury is worth a visit for anyone. However, somewhere in the ancient streets, amongst the timbered buildings, snuggled under ancient eaves, on roads that heard the clatter of hooves long before the sound of car engines, in this atmosphere of relaxed patience... is a shop selling Spider-Man comics! C'mon! Let's go!!!
