John Burke's Hastings, August 1999
Margate
Thursday 5 August 1999

On our way to Margate we stop at Canterbury for a short while and a few more comics!

Arriving at Cliftonville where we used to stay in the late 1960s and early 70s, I had to have another look at the Lido - the pleasure complex and open-air swimming pool where we spent so much time. A disappointment was in store - the pool was full of sand and earth (right).

The postcard (below left) shows how it used to look.

The theatre hadn't changed much but the rest of the town had a shabby uncared-for look about it.

The shops (right) made an effort to be bright with the inflatable beach toys but had not seen a coat of paint in a few years.

We walked down the hill into Margate itself. Past the little triangle of open space where the Hells Angels used to gather every night, down to the little harbour. The tide was out and the harbour was empty of water.

The pier had disappeared, though the beach itself had changed little and appeared as popular as ever!

A combined shelter and seafront sun deck.

The Dreamland amusement park is set behind a row of buildings on the seafront.

Is anyone else always disappointed when they see a brakeman riding one of these things? The excitement of the ride then depends on the brakeman's skill and nerve instead of being more or less the same every ride.
Fran and Mum have a go at pouring coloured sand into glass bottles.

No... I'm not sure why either...

This was the piece of land that every night would throb with the sound of revving motorbikes. It looks far too genteel now!

Er... excuse me... What's that coming out of the top of my head???
