John Burke's Hastings, August 1999

Friday 6 August 1999
Blimey! Friday already! We had decided to have another crack at finding the actual town at
Rye. After driving all around it, we ended up in a car park by a familiar landmark!
Below left: small curio shops and antiques - and pubs - full of character. |
Right: this place housed a museum of mechanical music machines. Too good to miss! |
We sat, stood, or bent over at odd angles depending on which piece of musical
antiquity was playing or being described.
It is one of those places that is run by an enthusiast who spends all the money he takes from
visitors on adding to the wonderful collection of items in the museum. |
We could have easily sat entranced through a repeat of his journey around the room,
but other delights were waiting for us! |
The marvellous gatehouse was built in 1329 when Edward III gave money for
strengthening the town's fortifications. It the sole survivor of 4 such gates.
Walking through the Landgate leads you up a hill and rewards you with a view
out over the River Rother and the main road.
On a bench, Mum got talking to a lady who had moved from the
north west to live in Rye several decades ago. |
