The town of Hall (pronounced "Hal") is where the silver from the mine was minted into coins.

The mint is within the Castle of Hasegg. The Talermünze (taler) of 1486 was the first dollar of the world.

It was possible to strike your own coin either with a hammer or with a screw press. I had a go!

We now had a couple of hours free to look round the town.
Lots of alleyways in what was obviously the old part of town. Across to our left were more modern buildings but we stayed within the old part which had more character.
There was little snow here. It varied greatly from place to place but we had no way of knowing how high we were in the towns.
It was quite a dull day in Hall, but it matched somehow with the buildings.
Many were in need of a bit of paint or repair work, but it all added to the character.
There were a few features that stood out and asked to be photographed!
This is typical Hall - two nuns walk down an otherwise deserted steeply sloping street.
On the way back to Mariastein we stopped at Linda's souvenir shop. We bought some place mats for the table.

One wall was full of cuckoo clocks.
